US Damaging Iran's Interests under N. Deal by Showing Disloyalty

TEHRAN (defapress)- Chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi warned that the US Congress's possible vote to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal will dissuade Tehran from continued commitment to the agreement.

US Damaging Iran's Interests under N. Deal by Showing Disloyalty

"If the US Congress decides to violate and abrogates the nuclear deal and its undertakings, the Islamic Republic of Iran will have no motivation to continue the path," Boroujerdi said in a meeting with Paris' Special Envoy to Syria Franck Gellet in Tehran on Monday.

He added that the world will then understand that Iran enjoys more capabilities to continue progress in developing its peaceful nuclear technology than the pre-nuclear deal era.

Boroujerdi also underscored the deterrent nature of Iran's missile power, noting that it is not negotiable at all.

In relevant remarks on Sunday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani warned that his country will revise its loyalty to the 2015 nuclear deal with the world powers if the US administration continues pressures and attempts to deprive Tehran of its benefits.

"We are a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and have accepted certain undertakings in the nuclear deal and we have paid a high price in the nuclear deal. If (US President Donald) Trump's incorrect behavior creates a situation in which we don’t use the benefits of the nuclear deal and only pay the price, we will certainly review this issue," Larijani said in a meeting with Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo in Russia.

Zerbo, for his part, underlined that the nuclear deal was the most important international agreement signed in the past 10 years, adding that all parties to the deal should try to protect it and no country should attempt to annul the agreement.

His comments came after Trump delivered a speech on Friday, outlining Washington's strategy on Iran.

The US president refused to certify the 2015 international nuclear agreement between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, and warned that he might ultimately terminate it, in defiance of other world powers and undermining a landmark victory of multilateral diplomacy.

Trump said he would choose not to certify that Tehran is complying with the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

While Trump did not pull Washington out of the nuclear deal, he gave the US Congress 60 days to decide whether to reimpose economic sanctions against Tehran that were lifted under the pact.
