Bahraini Clerics Call for Nationwide Protests on Uprising Anniversary
Bahrain’s top religious scholars or the Ulama in a statement released on Tuesday evening called for greater participation in Wednesday’s demonstrations to protest Al Khalifa totalitarian regime, the Arabic language Al Manar television channel reported.
Bahraini religious scholars urged people to be united and cautioned people about dissemination of misleading information by the authorities aimed at weakening the people’s anti-regime protests.
In their statement, Bahraini scholars saluted the people’s trust in God, steadfastness, resoluteness, efforts and faith in their revolution’s legitimacy.
Meantime, Deputy Secretary General of Bahrain's al-Wefaq Islamic bloc Sheikh Hussein al-Daihi said that the country’s ruling regime is misleading the country and provoking division among people.
The uprising in Bahrain began on February 14, 2011. Protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. However, the demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
Scores of people have been killed in the crackdown and security forces have arrested hundreds including doctors and nurses. Dozens of demonstrators have also been sentenced to jail terms for attending street protests.
International human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Manama regime for its excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.
