Speaker's Advisor: Iran to Continue Supporting Iraq in Reconstruction Era

Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Amir Abdollahian renewed Iran's support for neighboring Iraq, specially in the reconstruction period.

Speaker's Advisor: Iran to Continue Supporting Iraq in Reconstruction EraTEHRAN (Defapress)-"We will keep on supporting the war-torn Iraq in a bid to enable the country to play its role in the region," Amir Abdollahian said in a meeting with Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq Alice Walpole in Tehran on Tuesday.

He added that Iraq’s recent victories in the fight against ISIL and the country’s parliamentary election should receive serious support from the international community.

The UN official, for her part, thanked Iran for its contribution in combating terrorism and assisting Iraq, and said, "Iraq reconstruction requires global and all-out efforts through international organizations and participation of the neighboring countries."

The two sides also expressed optimism at the political process and the future of Iraq in the region.

In relevant remarks in late May, Amir Abdollahian congratulated the successful parliamentary elections in Iraq, and said that Tehran would continue to support Baghdad as its strategic ally.

"The actual election result in Iraq was the people's vote for independence, security, protection of territorial integrity, and putting a stop to occupation,” Amir Abdollahian wrote on his Twitter account.

The senior advisor underlined that Iraq has no place for the US and other sponsors of terrorism, and said, "The leadership and nation of Iraq will remain a powerful pillar of a prosperous, free and independent Iraq."

Amir Abdollahian reiterated that Baghdad "has and will continue" to have an important position in the region.

The Sa'iroun (Marchers) political bloc, cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's alliance with communists, was announced by Iraq's electoral commission on Saturday as the winner of the country's parliamentary elections. Sadr's alliance captured 54 parliamentary seats, followed by al-Fatih Coalition led by Hadi al-Amiri with 47. Al-Nasr Alliance, headed by Prime Minister al-Abadi, took the third place with 42 seats.
