US Economic Terrorism on Iran Not EffectiveAddressing a large and fervent congregation of the people in Tehran on Friday, Ayatollah Movahedi Kermani said, “The US assumes that by increasing its economic pressures, it can bring the Iranian people to their knees, but everyone knows that their economic pressures have not been effective.”

“While the enemy seeks its goal via telling lies, we should follow our policy of resistance economy,” the senior cleric added.

In relevant remarks on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif deplored US President Donald Trump for increasing economic sanctions against Tehran, describing it as a deliberate act to target the ordinary people in Iran.

Zarif wrote on his twitter page that Trump's decision was meant to escalate the economic war against Tehran regardless of its consequences.

The sanctions is "admission that US is deliberately targeting ordinary citizens" which is an instance of "economic terrorism" and is "illegal and inhuman", he said.

His comments came after Trump said he had ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “substantially” increase economic sanctions.

“I have just instructed the Secretary of the Treasury to substantially increase Sanctions on the country of Iran!” Trump tweeted, without providing more details.

In separate statements on July 31, the US departments of State and Treasury announced the imposition of sanctions against Zarif because he “acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Back on June 24, US President Donald Trump announced new sanctions against Iran, targeting Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and top commanders of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
