Pro-Russians accuse Kiev of violating peace deal

The two regions released a joint statement on Wednesday, saying Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s decision violates a truce deal signed in September in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.

"Kiev's cancelation of the special status for Donbass causes serious damage to the Mink peace process," the pro-Russia forces said.

They stressed that the move nullified the peace agreement, adding: "The DNR (Donetsk People's Republic) and LNR (Lugansk People's Republic) cannot act on the basis of a document from which Poroshenko has removed fundamentally important points."

On Tuesday, Poroshenko said he wanted parliament to cancel the "special status" law that would have allowed the eastern regions to run their own affairs and offered forces impunity from prosecution.

Kiev moved to suspend the law after elections were held in Donetsk and Lugansk a few days ago.

The elections were held on Sunday despite condemnation from Kiev and the West that such a move would undermine peace efforts in Ukraine. Russia, however, says it recognizes the outcome.

The Kiev government and pro-Russia forces signed a ceasefire agreement in September after negotiations in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk among former Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma, who represented the government in Kiev, Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of pro-Russian forces in Donetsk and Igor Plotnitsky, the leader of pro-Russian forces in the Lugansk region.
