CIA responsible for Coup 53

TEHRAN (Defapress) – The role of the UK secret service in the coup of 1953 Iran was not obvious until the intelligence agent of MI6 unveiled this fact. Experts believe that this act was because of the US decision to label this coup as their victory while the UK was the main actor in this shameful act.

CIA responsible for Coup 53

The UK spy whose name is Darbyshire, reveals this secret but no one continues this fact or even denies or rejects it. The policy of the UK was hiding any sign of their participation in the coup in 1953 in Iran.

But the UK was not the only one responsible for the 1953 coup, but CIA also played a critical role as the documents revealed that the military coup that overthrew Mosaddegh and his National Front cabinet was carried out under CIA direction as an act of US foreign policy, conceived and approved at the highest levels of governments. Besides the documents, political leaders also confess to their participation like what they did in their presidential election debates.

In a speech in 2000, the US ex-foreign affairs minister, Madeleine Albright mentioned the country's "significant role" in overthrowing the government of Moasaddegh. In his speech in Cairo in 2009, US President Barack Obama described the CIA's action as "the overthrow of an elected democratic government of Iran".

The CIA has brought this information in the latest episode of its official podcast, which is dedicated to the operation to escape six American diplomats from Iran after the occupation of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979, and revealed new details about one of the most famous CIA operations in history. The American Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, announced for the first time that its support for the coup against the government of Mosaddegh the Prime Minister of Iran, in August 1953 was not "democratic".

The story starts from the time that the Iranian oil was explored like a fairy tale for the UK officials. They reached an endless source of energy while the UK navy changed their fuel from coal to oil. By that, the price and value of the oil increased and gained value in the energy market. Refineries and oil wells of Abadan seem like the bubbling fountain of wealth for the UK and they wanted to save that at any price. Before the Mosaddegh period of Prime Ministry, the UK oil company known as BP had the whole control of the oil well and just paid 16 percent of the profit of selling the oil, to the Iran's government. Of course, we should not forget the fact that they were deducting the tax from this amount of profit.

At that time, Mohammad Reza Shah was the one who held the power of the Pahlavi kingdom. At that time, he was the young king who was not aware of the political relations and was impressible by his surroundings. For that reason, he could take effect from the speech of others and make decisions.

By the time Mosaddegh took power and fought for nationalizing the oil, the British principles felt worried about what was going on in Iran. This movement was for two main reasons. First was because of Iran's lack of benefit from huge profits of oil sales, second was the bad behavior of the UK workers with Iranians.

As a result of nationalizing the oil, the UK engineers and workers were deported and left Iran and oil Implementations all alone. First, they sabotaged the Implementations and put barriers in their way. Then they put strong sanctions on Iran's oil in a way that threatened the buyers. So in this situation, the economic situation, the foundations of the country's economy were weakened

Then, the UK officials tried to convince the Shah to eliminate Mosaddegh and put Ahmad Qavam. As a result, he took power but despite the Tudeh party's association with Mosaddegh's followers, he lost the power and fled from Iran and Mosaddegh retook power.

In the second attempt of the CIA, they tried to sack the Mosaddegh from power by military coup but they failed again. But MI6 was not disappointed and continued their path to overthrow the Mosaddegh from power. MI6 tried to infiltrate Iran's army and by using Ardeshir Zahedi, planned for another coup in which they used the tag-rag and military against the Mosaddegh's government. Zahedi was an officer who was in jail during the Allies' occupation of Iran, because of his corruption record in economy and morality, was a great choice for this coup operation. They succeeded in their plan and dismissed Mosaddegh from his position. During the process of this coup, Shah ran away from Iran and did not return until he could regain his previous power through a coup.

Although the UK played a great role in the coup in 1953 using their broadcast channel, BBC, they ignored any participation in this military coup. They even cleared any signs that could point to their participation. Even when a TV series was made for UK history, they cut the scenes where their agent, Darbyshire, confessed his role in those operations.

However, the UK government lost its whole share in BP Company and had partners such as the US and other European countries in their share; but still counting that as one of their successes in history.

The historians believed that Mosaddegh's attempt at democracy was like what Gandhi did for his nation. In their point of view, if the democracy which was like a seed, developed and raised, now the face of the Middle East could be different. However, the US and UK showed that they were afraid of democracy; they wanted a puppet in power to obey their orders.
