Iran Sensitive about Security of Region, NeighborsSpeaking to reporters before leaving Tehran for Kyrgyzstan for participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, Rouhani said the important conference would discuss the regional security issues.

“Today, the issue of security, either in the very delicate region of Persian Gulf, the Middle East, or the entire Asia and the world, is of special significance for us,” the president added.

“Iran has always tried to safeguard and protect regional peace and security, as we have practically demonstrated over the past years how sensitive we are about the neighboring states and the security of the region,” he added.

The president further noted that the SCO summit will be attended by important states like Russia and China, saying it is necessary to hold talks with those two major friends of Iran about the 2015 nuclear deal, to which both of them are parties.

Rouhani also lashed out at the US for violating the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and for waging an economic war against Iran, adding, “What the US is doing today is worse than the violation of a resolution and breach of a treaty and deal.”

“What the US does is economic terrorism. The US has for the first time started a war with a nation overtly and brazenly, particularly with the vulnerable groups of the society,” the president deplored, stressing that the Iranian nation will definitely emerge victorious in the US economic war.

The Iranian president is planned to travel to Tajikistan after Kyrgyzstan to attend the 5th summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) at the invitation of his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Rouhani’s participation in the summit has been confirmed during Tajik Foreign Minister Sirodjidin Mukhriddin’s recent trip to Tehran.

The upcoming CICA summit in Dushanbe, slated for June 14 and 15, is designed to serve as a platform for discussing and resolving problems in Asia, as well as for promoting initiatives and finding effective mechanisms at a high level.

The idea of formation of CICA was first brought up by Kazakhstan’s outgoing President Nursultan Nazarbayev in October 1992, during the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
