With more than 10 million votes counted, or about 70 percent of the total, Kast had a clear lead overJeannette Jara, a member of the Communist Party and leader of the broad left coalition.

Jara, 51, admitted defeat in a message on social media, congratulated the president-elect, and wished him success.

Kast, a conservative Catholic, focused his campaign on fighting crime and promised to deport some 340,000 illegal immigrants, mostly Venezuelans.

He openly supported the military dictatorship and said that if Pinochet were alive, he would have voted for him.

In the first round of the election on November 16, both candidates won about a quarter of the vote, with a slight advantage for the left. But the right-wing candidates together managed to win 70 percent of the vote.
