Iranian, Russian nuclear chiefs discuss growing cooperation

TEHRAN(defapress) – The head of Iran's atomic energy organization in a meeting with his Russian counterpart in Vienna, Austria, on Monday, hailed Tehran-Moscow growing cooperation in the field of peaceful nuclear activities.

Iranian, Russian nuclear chiefs discuss growing cooperationThe meeting between Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali-Akbar Salehi and Director General of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Alexy Likhachov was held on the sidelines of the 62nd International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference.

Salehi discussed the need for boosting Iran-Russia cooperation in the fields of scientific, technological, research and development (R&D) activities and the idea was welcomed by the Russian side.

Likhacjov, in return, voiced Rossatom's readiness for bilateral cooperation with Iran in manufacturing medium-size reactors for generating electricity and desalination of water.

The two sides also discussed latest status of the nuclear power plants being under construction in Iran.

The construction process of Iran’s second power plant will begin next year after completion of two years of planning and other preliminary measures.

Producing stable isotopes used in industry and medicine, as well as feasibility of contracting related labs were also explored at the meeting.

The 62nd IAEA conference began on Monday in Vienna, and will be wrapped up in four days.

Representatives from the IAEA’s Member States, including at ministerial level and above, will discuss key elements of the Agency’s priorities in its work on the peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
