TEHRAN (Defapress) - The poll, conducted between February 26 and 28, found that 34% of Americans consider Russia an ally or a friendly nation, while 32% view it as unfriendly and another 34% see it as an enemy. Republican respondents were more likely to hold a favorable view, with 41% describing Russia as friendly or an ally, compared to a smaller percentage of Democrats.
The survey also highlighted that while 52% of Americans support Ukraine, 44% remain neutral, and only 4% side with Russia. Opinions on former US President Donald Trump’s stance are similarly divided: just 11% believe he supports Kyiv, while 46% think he favors Moscow. Another 43% say Trump treats both countries equally.
A separate CBS News poll from March 2024 showed that 37% of Americans viewed Russia as their country’s enemy, while only 3% considered it an ally.
Following the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, CBS News found growing pressure on Russia, with 78% of Americans supporting economic sanctions and 72% backing the US sending supplies and weapons to Kyiv.
Trump’s approach to Russia represents a shift from his predecessor Joe Biden’s strategy of isolating Moscow, as he seeks to normalize bilateral relations. Both Russia and the US have suggested that this change could pave the way for a quicker resolution to the Ukraine conflict. In an effort to mediate peace, Trump held a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12.
