TEHRAN (Defapress) - Google signed a secret agreement with the US Department of War this month that allows the Pentagon to use Google’s advanced AI models, including Gemini, for “any lawful government purpose.” The agreement places Google alongside other tech giants such as OpenAI and Grok, which have previously signed similar contracts with the US government.

According to reports published on the subject so far, the agreement allows Google to provide the Pentagon with its advanced AI models (including Gemini) on top-secret military networks. These systems will be used at very high security levels (such as networks with classified and top-secret data).

This collaboration between the Pentagon and IT companies is also part of a broader project in which several large technology companies, such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Amazon, are also present to strengthen the US military's artificial intelligence infrastructure. In fact, the scope of this collaboration allows the Pentagon to use Google's AI for a wide range of military purposes, including mission planning, operational analysis, processing classified data, and supporting strategic decision-making.

Pentagon goals for this collaboration

The main goal of the Pentagon is to transform the US military into an "AI-based fighting force." In this regard, the use of artificial intelligence in the areas of battlefield data analysis and increasing the speed of decision-making, target identification, and support for military operations, logistics management, and equipment failure prediction, and increasing the efficiency of intelligence and surveillance operations is planned.

Experts and experts in the military fields, as well as in the field of artificial intelligence, believe that these measures of the US Department of Defense are evaluated in line with the military superiority and technological competition of the US with global powers such as China.

Reports indicate that the Pentagon intends to use artificial intelligence not only in support, but also in direct military applications, including planning military missions, analyzing satellite and drone images, and helping to select targets in operations.

Although some documents refer to "human supervision", these contracts allow the US government to use artificial intelligence for "any lawful purpose," and companies also have limited control over the final use. This is a matter that actually creates and strengthens the concern that the Pentagon and the US military will use artificial intelligence in military missions and operations directly.

Limitations and commitments

According to reports, the Pentagon's contract with Google includes provisions against widespread domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons without human supervision. However, Google will not have any veto power over legal government operational decisions and is even required to adjust the safety settings and filters of its models if requested by the Pentagon.

But another important issue in the Pentagon-Google cooperation is that the contract is part of a larger US Department of War initiative that includes agreements of up to $200 million with major artificial intelligence providers.

Concerns and opposition

This cooperation has also faced widespread critical reactions from international institutions, organizations, and human rights. In this regard, some Google employees and technology experts have warned against the military use of artificial intelligence, especially since these collaborations will be in the fields of “developing autonomous weapons,” “expanding surveillance and control,” and “reducing the role of human decision-making in war.” Accordingly, even some companies, such as Anthropic, have refused to cooperate with the Pentagon due to ethical concerns.

The secret agreement between Google and the Pentagon represents an important strategic shift, especially in the field of the widespread introduction of artificial intelligence into the US military structure. With this move, the Pentagon seeks to increase decision-making power, speed of operations, and technological superiority in future wars; but on the other hand, this path is also accompanied by serious ethical and security challenges.

It is worth noting that in the war imposed by the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran, numerous news reports have been published about the use and application of artificial intelligence. In response, our country's armed forces, in a powerful move, targeted part of the artificial intelligence infrastructure in the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf, inflicting heavy blows and extensive damage to American information technology centers; something that is expected to be achieved with greater effort and scope in the next round of the battle.
