TEHRAN (Defapress) - The United States plans to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. US President Donald Trump has announced this decision due to his good relations with Polish President Karol Nawrozki. Warsaw expects these new troops to strengthen NATO's eastern flank and European security. However, for Russia, this increase in troops poses additional risks, as Polish politicians have repeatedly spoken about blocking Kaliningrad and harsh scenarios for this Russian region.

Moving American Terrorists from Berlin to Warsaw

While Trump had announced a reduction of 5,000 American troops in Germany, he has now announced that he will send the same number of troops to Poland. Analysts interpret this move as a "redistribution of political weight in Europe." Germany has traditionally been the main US military hub on the continent, but a boost in Poland could change that.

Warsaw has extensive plans to become a “key US military base”; Poland’s deputy defence minister has said the country is ready to build a “small town” for US soldiers and their families, with schools and medical facilities.

There are currently about 10 NATO bases in Poland, including the US 5th Army Corps forward base in Poznan and the F-22 fighter jet base at LASK. The Rzeszów region, due to its proximity to the Ukrainian border, has also become a vital transport hub for Western military aid to Kyiv.

If the plan goes ahead, the number of US troops in Poland will reach about 15,000.

Trump’s comments come just a day after the Pentagon cancelled plans to deploy 4,000 troops to Poland, a decision that Warsaw learned about through the media. The Pentagon itself seems to have been taken aback by the president's new announcement. Experts believe that the troops being sent to Warsaw will not be new troops, but rather the same ones that Trump has promised to send to Poland.

This move will have consequences for Poland and Europe beyond a simple military boost:

1. Enhancing Europe's standing: Experts say Warsaw is seeking to increase its influence in Europe and wants to replace Germany as "America's strongest ally" on the continent.

2. Undermining the "Army of Europe" project: Warsaw's reliance on the United States undermines French plans to create an independent European army.

3. Threatening Russia: From Moscow's perspective, the proximity of US military infrastructure to the borders of Russia and Belarus, especially in the Kaliningrad region and the Suwalki corridor, is seen as a hostile move. Polish officials have previously openly spoken about "blocking" Kaliningrad.

However, some analysts believe that the exact nature and number of these forces are still unclear, and, given Trump's sudden changes in policies, there is a possibility that this decision could be reversed again.
