ISIL atrocities displace over 1.8 mn Iraqis

According to a report issued by IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) on Tuesday, an estimated 1,814,862 people (302,477 families) are displaced in the crisis-hit country. The report covers internal displacement from January through October 5, 2014.

The figure indicates a rise of more than 61,000 displaced people since late September.

The report shows that Nineveh and Anbar Provinces have the largest displaced population with 147,875 and 83,979 families respectively. The two provinces are the areas most affected by the current crisis in Iraq.

The IOM report further reveals that heavy fighting in the city of Hit in Iraq's restive western province of al-Anbar has forced over 3,708 families to flee. Of the displaced people, 525 families had been previously displaced to the Iraqi city and have now suffered a second displacement.

The report additionally suggests that Iraq’s Kurdistan region houses 142,380 displaced families, which equals to 47 percent of the total displaced population. It further notes that Dohuk Province of Iraq's northern region of Kurdistan, together with the districts of al-Shikhan and Akre, hosts 30 per cent of the displaced people.

It is also reported that 7 of Iraq's 18 governorates have witnessed displacement from within and across governorate borders and the Iraqi provinces of Salah al-Din and Nineveh have seen significant population losses.

The IOM Iraq chief of mission said he is extremely concerned about the condition of displaced families as winter approaches.

ISIL terrorists operating in Iraq have committed many atrocities targeting civilians, especially Kurds, which has compelled them to flee from their homes.
