Iran, UN Reiterate Settling of Referendum Crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan Region

TEHRAN (defapress)- Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi and UN Special Envoy for Iraq Yan Kubish in a meeting in Baghdad underlined the need for the settlement of the Iraqi Kurdistan’s referendum within the framework of the country's constitution.

Iran, UN Reiterate Settling of Referendum Crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan RegionDuring the meeting held in the Iraqi capital on Sunday, Masjedi and Kubish explored the avenues for boosting cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and extremism in the region.

Masjedi said that the Iraqi Constitution should be respected, adding that the Iraqi Kurds should accept that they can tackle their problems by observing the Iraqi Constitution.

In relevant remarks on Friday, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif renewed Iran's support for the territorial and national sovereignty of Iraq.

"I hope that everyone in Iraqi Kurdistan will follow the path of late (former Iraqi president) Jalal Talabani who was symbol of unity in Iraq," Zarif told reporters on the sidelines of a funeral procession held for late Talabani in Suleimaniyeh in Iraqi Kurdistan.

He reiterated that the friendship of Iranians and Iraqis, including the Iraqi Kurds, is age old.
