TEHRAN (defapress) – Foreign ministers of Iran and Italy in a meeting in Rome discussed ways to promote cooperation between the two countries in various fields, stressing the need for stronger economic ties.

Top Diplomats Mull Boosting Iran-Italy TiesIran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the delegation accompanying him in his trip to Rome held a meeting with Italy’s Angelino Alfano on Thursday evening for talks on a range of issues.

Weighing up plans for closer cooperation between Tehran and Rome in all fields, the two sides called for stronger trade and coordination in international organizations.

The talks also covered the latest developments in the Middle East.

In the meeting, the Italian foreign minister voiced the European Union’s support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) -a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany)- stressing the need for all parties to honor the deal.

Iran’s foreign minister travelled to Italy on Thursday to attend the third edition of the Rome MED - Mediterranean Dialogues.

On the sidelines of the event, Zarif met European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini and Foreign Minister of Iraq Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

He also attended a gathering of Iranian expatriates residing in Italy.
