US Possible Strike on Syria A Futile Move: Iran Ex-EnvoyIn an interview with Defapreess, Hossein Sheikholeslam said US President Donald Trump’s threat to take military action against Syria in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons is another instance of American attempts to play a role in the Arab country.

The US is trying to make up for its failure to overthrow the Damascus government or disintegrate Syria, and for its failed plans for Aleppo and Eastern Ghouta, he added.

Pointing to the successful process of Sochi peace negotiations and “stabilization” of the Syrian government, Sheikholeslam said even a real military attack on Syria by the US will be futile on the ground and from a political viewpoint, although it may be destructive.

A military strike on Syria could mark the latest US defeat in the Arab country, he concluded.

His comments came amid reports of a looming US military attack on Syria in response to the suspected use of chemical weapons.

The Syrian government has put its forces on "high alert" after the US threat.
