Death Sentence Aimed at Intimidating Bahrainis: ActivistTEHRAN (Defapress) -, Rashed al-Rashed slammed the death sentences imposed on Bahraini people by the regime courts as the “last option” that Al Khalifa is trying to crack down on protestors and political activists.

The Manama regime is seeking to intimidate people and discourage them from pursuing their demands, he said.

His comments came after Bahrain’s Military Court of Cassation on Wednesday upheld death sentences for seven nationals on charge of an attempt to assassinate a senior military commander. The court ruling sparked street demonstrations across Bahrain.

Elsewhere in the interview, Rashed said the death sentence is a violation of the values the international community claims to stand for.

Imposing death sentence to individuals on the basis of confession of an assassination plan obtained under duress and torture is invalid, he underlined.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
