Iran Lodges Protest over US Sanctions on ShipsIn a message on his Twitter account on Thursday, Iran’s Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinejad said the embassy has sent a letter to IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim to condemn the US unilateral sanctions against Iranian trade vessels.

The envoy said the letter has denounced the US sanctions as a violation of international shipping treaties that endangers maritime security.

The protest letter has also called on the IMO to hold a council meeting to address the issue on an ad hoc basis, Baeidinejad noted.

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, the IMO is tasked with regulating international shipping.

The organization works to promote "safe, secure, environmentally sound, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation," its mission statement reads.
