TEHRAN (Defapress) - Afghan officials have reported a devastating earthquake in the east of the country, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. According to reports, 800 people have lost their lives in Kunar province, and 2,500 others have been injured. In Nangarhar province, 12 people have been killed and 255 injured.
According to Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban government, Laghman province has also witnessed dozens of injuries. Shallow earthquakes cause more damage, especially in areas like Afghanistan, where most people live in low-rise, mud-brick houses.
Many of the residents of the earthquake-hit villages are Afghans who have returned to their country in recent years from Iran and Pakistan. "There is a lot of fear and anxiety... children and women were screaming. We have never experienced anything like this in our lives," said Ijazul Haq Yad, an agricultural worker in the Nurgol district, on Monday.
