Portugal Will Recognize the State of Palestine

TEHRAN (Defapress) - According to Al Jazeera, Portugal intends to recognize the state of Palestine tomorrow, Sunday.

The Portuguese Foreign Ministry announced this, adding that the announcement of the recognition of the independent Palestinian state will be made on Sunday.

The move comes hours after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country would recognize the independent Palestinian state on Monday at the United Nations.

He said: "I have reiterated to Mahmoud Abbas that France will recognize the Palestinian state "on Monday in New York."

Macron stressed that recognizing the state of Palestine is "part of a comprehensive regional peace plan" that aims to meet the demands of Israelis and Palestinians in terms of security and peace.

The French president also said: "Abbas is once again determined to implement the necessary reforms to modernize the Palestinian governance structure and address the challenges of establishing stability in the future Palestinian state."

Macron added: "We will continue to support Palestinian institutions and guarantee that we will fulfill our commitments to ensure security and stability in the region."

The French presidency also warned in a statement that "annexation of the West Bank is a clear red line."

AFP also reported, citing the Elysee Palace, that 10 countries, including France, will recognize the Palestinian state during a conference in New York on Monday.

Earlier, another European country, Luxembourg, announced its intention to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
