Caspian Sea security must be safeguarded only by littoral states

TEHRAN(defapress) – Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Saturday that security of the Caspian Sea should only be guaranteed by its littoral states.

Caspian Sea security must be safeguarded only by littoral statesHe made the remarks in Indonesia while he was meeting a Russian high-ranking navy delegation on the sidelines of the third International Maritime Security Symposium (IMSS) which was held in Nusa Dua, on the island of Bali.

"We believe that Caspian Sea is the sea of peace and friendship and establishment of security in this sea needs no foreign intervention and littoral states by themselves are capable of safeguarding its security,” said the Iranian commander.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. It is located between Europe and Asia and bounded by Iran to the south, Russia to the northwest, Azerbaijan to the west, Kazakhstan to the northeast, and Turkmenistan to the southeast.

Sayyari and the Russian delegation alsso stressed the need for consolidating Iran-Russia relations, particularly in the field of marine interaction, and promoting bilateral cooperation in the educational and technical fields.

The talks with the Russian delegation were held at their request on the last day of Sayyari's stay in Indonesia.

The Iranian commandder arrived in Indonesia on August 21 to attend the third International Maritime Security Symposium and held separate meetings with the commanders and high-ranking delegations from various countries including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and Thailand.
