Israeli forces bombed a tent in the coastal area of ​​Al-Mawasi, killing a five-year-old girl and her uncle; with this attack, the number of Palestinian victims since the ceasefire began in October reached at least 422. A Palestinian child who was injured as a result of an Israeli airstrike was treated at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, on January 5, 2026. A five-story building that was damaged during the war also collapsed in central Gaza.

Israel has carried out heavy artillery and helicopter strikes on southern Gaza despite the ceasefire, targeting a refugee camp. The Nasser Medical Center in Khan Yunis said the deadly strike hit a tent in al-Mawasi and wounded several others, including children. The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas member who was planning to attack Israeli forces at the earliest opportunity. It did not provide any evidence for this claim, and it was not clear whether the statement referred to the tent.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces have carried out almost daily attacks on Gaza and continue to impose restrictions on humanitarian aid; Palestinian officials say about 88 percent of Gaza’s buildings have been destroyed or damaged by the fighting; most of Gaza’s two million people now live in tents, makeshift shelters or damaged buildings abandoned by Israeli forces.
