Iran calls on IAEA member states to strengthen measures against corruptionHe made the call during the second resumed 9th session of the Implementation Review Group of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which was held in Vienna from Nov. 12-14.

Gharibabadi stressed that Iran attaches great significance to the UN convention, and urged other member countries to look into this matter in a bid to strengthen international law enforcement and judicial cooperation by providing effective legal mechanisms.

The official delineated the Islamic Republic’s achievements in fighting against crimes in the national and international levels, and welcomed any exchange of experience, knowledge and methods in this regard with other countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian diplomat rebuked some member countries that “have become safe havens for financial criminals”, and urged them to stick to their commitments and boost collaborations to pursue the criminals and bring them to justice.

The UN Convention against Corruption is a multilateral treaty negotiated by member states of the United Nations and promoted by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It is one of several legally binding international anti-corruption agreements. UNCAC requires state parties to the treaty to implement several anti-corruption measures that focus on five main areas: prevention, law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, and technical assistance and information exchange.
