Iran MPs give no-confidence vote to proposed minister

Ahmadabadi attended an open session of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) on Wednesday to respond to the MPs’ questions. The session was chaired by Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani.

Out of 246 lawmakers who cast their votes, 160 lawmakers voted against his nomination while 79 were in favor and seven abstained.

Accordingly, Nili Ahmadabadi failed to secure a vote of confidence as he needed half plus one of the votes to be voted into office.

In a letter to Larijani, President Rouhani had introduced Nili Ahmadabadi as his proposed minister for the science, research and technology portfolio under Article 133 of Iran’s Constitution.

Nili Ahmadabadi is a professor of metallurgy at the University of Tehran, and the current chancellor of the prestigious institution.

Iran’s parliament voted former minister Reza Faraji-Dana out of office in an impeachment session in August.
