Iran, Russia Determined to Bolster N. Cooperation

TEHRAN (defapress)- High-ranking Iranian and Russian officials in a meeting in Moscow discussed ways to further broaden cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful nuclear technology.

Iran, Russia Determined to Bolster N. CooperationThe meeting was held between Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi and Director General of ROSATOM Alexey Likhachev in Moscow on Wednesday.

The two top nuclear officials conferred on the latest status of cooperation between the two countries in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and the prospects for mutual nuclear cooperation.

Salehi arrived in Moscow on July 1 and held a meeting with Likhachev on Wednesday as the last day of his pre-planned 3-day trip to Russia.

During the negotiations, the heads of atomic industries of Iran and Russia paid a special attention to the complicated circumstances revolving around Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and Iran nuclear program which have been created as a result of the US unilateral actions.

The two sides emphasized the importance of preserving the JCPOA and fulfilling commitments by all parties to the deal.

Salehi and Likhachev also exchanged views on the implementation of the Bushehr Power Plant project, and expressed their satisfaction with the progress of the project, the statement said, adding there was an explicit understanding between the two sides regarding the implementation of the project within the framework of the requirements of international rules.

During his 3-day trip, the Iranian nuclear chief visited Russia’s nuclear facilities in relation to VVER reactors.

The two sides also emphasized the continuation of bilateral relations and contacts.

Rosatom had participated in construction of the first nuclear power plant in Bushehr and now is also participating in construction of second and third units of the nuclear power plants.

AEOI's Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said in 2018 that Tehran and Moscow would continue mutual cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

"Russia has always supported Iran's stances during talks on Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," Kamalvandi said.

He pointed to cooperation between Iran and Russia in nuclear field, and said, "In addition to constructing one 1,000-megawatt power plant which is currently operational, two other 1,000-megawatt power plants are under construction."

The AEOI spokesman said in the field of production of sustainable isotopes and nuclear fuel, the two countries have good cooperation and recently the two sides had negotiations concerning cooperation in small- and medium-sized power plants.
