TEHRAN (Defapress) - The Israeli Channel 12 TV reported today (Monday), citing images published by the AP, that the runway has been built on the island of Zuqar near the city of Hodeidah in western Yemen.
The runway is about 2,000 meters long, and some believe that the airstrip is just part of a vast military network in the Red Sea and surrounding islands and could help with aerial surveillance of maritime activities in the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait.
No group has officially claimed responsibility for the construction of the runway. However, ship tracking data shows that a cargo ship from Dubai transported asphalt to the island to be used for the runway.
Emirati companies have previously participated in similar projects to build runways in Yemen.
