TEHRAN (Defapress) - New documents recently released by the US Department of Justice shed new light on Noam Chomsky’s close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. Among them is an email in which Chomsky talks about “fantasizing about a Caribbean island” where the American elite committed evil acts with children.

The intimacy between Chomsky and Epstein is evident in the leaked documents, as are many of their emails about planning meetings and casual social gatherings.
In another email to Steve Bannon, the right-wing White House strategist during Donald Trump’s first term, Chomsky wrote that he had “a lot to talk about” and that he had received his contact information from Epstein, a close friend of Trump.
At one point, Epstein’s ex-girlfriend Karina Shuliak also emailed a third party, whose identity has been redacted, saying that she and her boyfriend were planning to send Chomsky and his wife two genetic testing kits.
The most striking part of the documents, however, dates back to late February 2019; Epstein told a close friend that he had consulted Chomsky about how to deal with the “horrible treatment of the media and public opinion” he was receiving. This was 11 years after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting an underage girl for prostitution. He committed suicide in federal prison under suspicious circumstances shortly thereafter.
“The best thing to do is ignore it,” Epstein quoted Chomsky as saying in an email to a lawyer and a public relations manager. “Especially now, with the hysteria about the abuse of women that has reached a point where even questioning an allegation is a crime worse than murder.”
Neither Chomsky nor his second wife and spokeswoman, Valeria Chomsky, responded to requests for comment on the emails.
Caribbean island fantasies
The newly released documents further challenge Chomsky’s previous claims that his relationship with Epstein was largely financial. In the documents, Chomsky said that maintaining “regular contact” with Epstein had been “a very valuable experience.” Of course, these regular contacts also included financial matters. For example, Chomsky consulted Epstein during a complicated dispute with his children from his first marriage over money and the purchase of an apartment.
At one point, Chomsky’s lawyer suggested that he send a fiery email to a real estate agent about a dispute over a $187,000 account. However, Chomsky, considered one of the world’s most brilliant thinkers, asked Epstein for his opinion before sending it.
But beyond the financial issues, Chomsky’s relationship with Epstein brought him invitations to spend vacations with the elite and also connections with celebrities. For example, after planning a meeting in 2016, Epstein wrote to Chomsky: “It was a pleasure as always. Are you coming to New York or the Caribbean? Enjoy the food.”
Chomsky replied: “We had a great time too. Valeria is always looking forward to New York. I’m really fantasizing about the Caribbean island.”
That same year, Epstein wrote to Chomsky that he was always available to meet him in New York, noting: “Everyone in town is gone except us. Only Woody [Allen] is left. Maybe we can do it again.”
Chomsky replied that it would be great if they had dinner with Epstein and “the Allens.” Chomsky was referring to acclaimed Hollywood director Woody Allen and his wife Soon-Yi Previn.
Controversial advice
Chomsky's media advice to Epstein came after he was convicted in federal court of sexual assault of underage girls. A federal judge ruled that U.S. Justice Department prosecutors violated federal law by withholding Epstein's plea agreement from more than 30 of his underage victims.
Two days after the verdict, Epstein sent an email titled "Chomsky's Thoughts" to his lawyer and public relations manager, signed "Noam," which read: "I've seen the terrible treatment [of you] by the media and the public. It's painful, but I think the best thing to do is to ignore them. I've been through a barrage of hysterical accusations myself. I don't pay attention to them unless they ask me directly. It's nonsense, but it's the best thing to do."
Federal prosecutors charged Epstein with sex trafficking in July 2019. Epstein, 66, died in federal prison in August 2019.
Sensitivity over the federal government’s handling of the case grew after Trump promised during the 2024 election to release a complete list of “Epstein’s clients.” But after returning to office in 2025, his Justice Department announced that no such list existed. After intense public pressure, Trump finally signed a bill requiring the Justice Department to release more documents, of which this collection is a part.
Chomsky, who turned 97 in December, is a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has been on unpaid leave from the University of Arizona since October 2023 due to medical conditions. His views as an anti-colonial intellectual and a prominent Jew have resonated around the world.
