TEHRAN (Defapress) - During a virtual extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of the United Nations Charter concerning Palestine, the Iranian diplomat articulated Tehran’s position on the recent developments in the region, urging the international community to prevent the normalization of Israel's violations and aggressive actions.
“Today, the credibility of the United Nations Charter, which embodies the collective aspiration of nations for peace and justice, is in question,” he emphasized.
Araqchi remarked, “One UN member state is compromising the effectiveness of the UN system by openly contravening the principles and regulations of international law, including the UN Charter.”
The minister characterized Israel’s prolonged actions in the Gaza Strip, lasting 14 months, as a continuation of an 80-year "colonial extermination" agenda in Palestine, evident in the escalating occupation of Palestinian territories and the enforcement of apartheid against the occupied population.
He emphasized the necessity of a global coalition to hold Israel accountable and to prosecute its leaders to halt the genocide in Gaza and the aggression against Lebanon.
Araqchi further advocated for sanctions against the military, financial, and political backers of the Israeli regime, particularly the United States.
“The international community, having learned the painful lessons of two world wars, has rarely witnessed such blatant disregard for the foundational norms of international law,” he continued, adding, “The atrocities in Gaza and Lebanon reveal a shocking reality, a war strategy that dismisses humanity, morality, and universally recognized principles in favor of unlawful onslaught.”
The foreign minister urged the UN Secretary-General to initiate regular updates to the Security Council and General Assembly concerning the humanitarian situation in occupied Palestine. Araqchi emphasized that all relevant states have a legal duty under international law to support the legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people against occupation and apartheid in their pursuit of self-determination.
He condemned the occupying regime's use of the principle of "self-defense" as a justification for attacking Palestinians, resulting in the deaths of women and children and the destruction of Gaza's infrastructure, describing it as "completely unacceptable."
“The regime has no right to claim such an entitlement against a people under occupation,” he added.
Araqchi highlighted the collective responsibility of the international community to intervene and halt the genocide and the killing of innocent individuals in Palestine and Lebanon.
