Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, made the remark on the sidelines of a special summit on the 20th anniversary of the Chemical Weapons Convention in response to a question about US allegations about the use of chemical weapons by Syrian government.
"Iran has firmly condemned the US attack on Syria and we have issued necessary warnings about any possible attacks in the future,” Araghchi said.
He went on to add, "we are in close talks with European countries on this issue and Mr. Zarif brought the issue to the attention of senior European officials during his visit to Italy, France and Germany.”
Araghchi expressed hope that the US administration would refrain from any arbitrary and unlawful measure in Syria.
"We have insisted on Mr. Üzümcü, Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), who is in Tehran, to continue the process of chemical weapons prohibition for the remaining countries,” he added.
Araghchi voiced concern over the possibility of terrorists’ access to chemical weapons, adding "in Syria, ISIL carried out a chemical attack on innocent people which created a crisis followed by accusations leveled against the Syrian government.”
"We support OPCW in discovering the truth about the use of chemical weapons in Syria by terrorist groups and are in close talks with Syrian government on this issue,” he said.
