TEHRAN (Defapress) - Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that the Syrian government's fall is due to the Syrian military's failure to confront armed groups that seized many regions, including Damascus. Abbas Araqchi remarked during a state television interview that it was the Syrian army's responsibility to fight against anti-government forces. He mentioned a consistent plot by the United States and Israel aiming to weaken the axis of resistance.

Araqchi claimed that Iran's intelligence was aware of the armed groups' activities and had shared this information with the Syrian government and army. He stated that had the Syrian army resisted, places like Aleppo could have been saved. He described the crisis in Syria as somewhat expected given recent events in Gaza and Lebanon but was surprised by the Syrian military's lack of response.

He noted that during a recent meeting, former President Assad seemed shocked by his army's situation. Araqchi emphasized that Iran and Syria have worked closely together for over 40 years, particularly in areas like resistance against Israel. He also highlighted the joint struggle against ISIS terrorists and credited the late General Qasem Soleimani for leading successful anti-terror operations.

Araqchi criticized recent conflicts in Syria as violations of the Astana process aimed at establishing peace through dialogue. He highlighted concerns from 8 regional countries about Syria potentially disintegrating or allowing ISIS to return. He called for respect for Syria's sovereignty and an immediate stop to clashes to facilitate dialogue.

He remarked on Hezbollah's resilience despite challenges and stated that their capabilities remain adequate for future resistance. He also expressed Iran's intention to monitor developments closely and to ensure the safety of its diplomatic and religious sites in Syria.

Araghchi emphasized that Iran is attentively observing the ongoing developments, and its stance will be influenced by the policies adopted by militant groups within the Arab nation towards the Islamic Republic.

He stated that they are in a wait-and-see mode regarding the formation of a new government in Syria. Should they reach a consensus to recognize that government, it would be expected to grant the Syrian embassy in Tehran. Until such a time, the current ambassador and staff will continue their duties at the embassy.

Concerning the Iranian embassy, Araghchi highlighted that discussions have been held with various stakeholders in Syria to ensure the safety of the diplomatic mission in Damascus and the consulate in Aleppo, as well as to protect the holy sites.
