TEHRAN (Defapress) - According to the Anadolu Agency, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced that Brazil has officially intervened in the case brought by South Africa against the Zionist regime over the violation of the Convention on the Suppression of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.
According to the statement of the Court, Brazil submitted its statement of intervention on September 17 under Article 63 of the Statute of the Court. This article grants the right to intervene to states that are parties to a convention being interpreted by the Court.
In the statement, Brazil stated that as a party to the 1948 Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, it has exercised this right.
It also emphasized that the interpretation of Articles 1, 2, and 3 of the Convention in this case is subject to judgment and has presented its legal views.
The Court emphasized that any interpretation issued in the final judgment will also be binding on Brazil.
Accordingly, the Court has asked South Africa and the Israeli regime to submit their written observations on Brazil's intervention.
The case against Israel by South Africa was filed on December 29, 2023. The country accuses Tel Aviv of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention in its attacks on Palestinians in Gaza.
The Court has since issued a series of interim measures requiring Israel to prevent the crime of genocide.
Brazil joins a group of countries, including Colombia, Mexico, Spain, Turkey, Chile, and Ireland, that have so far requested intervention in the case.
The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations and adjudicates legal disputes between countries.
